Indigenous Career Internship Opportunity: Environmental Communications

Join Water First Education & Training Inc., a passionate and growing organization working to support sustainable access to safe, clean water in Indigenous communities. Water First is a Canadian charity that partners with Indigenous communities across Canada to help address the water crisis through education, training, and meaningful collaboration.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Assistant to join the Communications & Fundraising team to support and learn about all the elements involved in raising awareness for our work. As a non-profit charity, we rely on the support of donors and champions. Building meaningful relationships with these groups is vital to our growth.

Terms of Employment

Full-time Contract:  37.5 hours a week, 16-week contract 
Salary: $19 –  $22/hr
Location: Primarily work from home, flexibility to attend meetings at the Water First head office in Creemore, Ontario. 
Start Date: Flexible start date. This position will remain open until filled.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Working in collaboration with the Communications & Fundraising and Community Engagement departments to support the team in providing an Indigenous perspective on materials created
  • Assist with the implementation of the social media strategy for Water First’s growing social media presence on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok and LinkedIn
  • Layout digital/print materials used to raise awareness or for program delivery
  • Assist with the creation of digital illustrations to be used in program delivery and marketing materials
  • Assist with exploring opportunities with gamers for third-party fundraising opportunities

Additional Assets:

  • Exceptional digital skills (email, social media, video creation) 
  • Experience using Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
  • Marketing and communications experience 
  • Preference for an educational background in Graphic Design, Communications, Marketing, or Indigenous Studies
  • Exceptional attention to detail
  • The ability to work effectively and independently 
  • Strong organizational skills
  • A flexible team player with a demonstrated ability to collaborate and support colleagues 
  • Resourceful and able to take initiative in a changing workplace environment
  • Motivated individual with a passion for water and interested in working in collaboration with Indigenous communities

This position is an Indigenous Career Intern Initiative. All applicants must self-identify as First Nations, Inuit or Métis, and:

  • have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
