In July 2024, Water First and Mamaweswen (North Shore) Tribal Council launched the brand-new Environmental Water Internship, a 15-month paid program for aspiring environmental leaders.

Through hands-on workshops, online learning, and local work placements in Lands and Environment Offices, interns gain practical skills in:

  1. Monitoring water quality
  2. Managing and analyzing environmental data
  3. Applying fisheries science techniques to sample fish

The program also includes local field trips that blend environmental and cultural learning, and invites guest speakers — including Elders, knowledge holders, and experts from Indigenous communities, academia, and government.

As an ECO Canada certified training course, the Environmental Water Internship prepares graduates to step confidently into careers in the environmental field or to pursue further education.

This video was created to share the opportunity with Mamaweswen’s member communities and highlight the exciting future for the next generation of water protectors.

IRTC Environmental Water Week

Drinking water advisory statistics are for federally maintained systems on First Nations reserve lands only. These numbers do not include private systems or systems in Inuit communities.

Drinking water advisories include short-term (under 1 year) and long-term (more than 1 year) boil water advisories, do not consume advisories, and do not use advisories for First Nation communities in Canada.

Calculating the number of drinking water advisories is a complex process. Water First relies on information from several different sources.
