Considering the water crisis faced by many Indigenous communities, there is a profound underrepresentation of Indigenous voices in Canada’s water governance. Couple this with a lack of employment and education opportunities for Indigenous youth and it becomes clear that it is critical we continue to offer Indigenous students the most impassioned, empowering, and exciting water science education learning opportunities possible.

Water First programs, designed for K-12 students, include multiple hands-on STEM workshops that explore custom curricular and local water science concepts. Students spend time on the land and in the classroom exploring these topics using water science tools and Water First learning resources. Working in collaboration with community members, students gain a greater understanding of their local geography and watershed. They also learn about the role they can play, as students and as young professionals, in protecting their water resources.

At Reliance, we’re privileged to give back to like-minded organizations in the communities where our customers and Team Members work and live. Our ESG efforts help us focus on our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment and promote sustainable practices that are mindful of climate change, including carbon emissions and waste reductions across our footprint. We’re committed to make a positive impact on our people and our planet and we understand the importance of addressing water challenges in Indigenous communities.

Creating Inter-Program Connections

Our long-term vision is to provide opportunities for Indigenous school-aged students to see a future for themselves in the water sciences. Engaging with students in meaningful ways, year after year, to learn about water health provides continuity and a deeper connection for the students with their land and water.

Where possible, we have students visit local water bodies, speak with interns from other Water First programs, as well as arrange tours of local water and wastewater treatment plants. Through these experiences, they learn about the role they can play, as students and as emerging scientists, in protecting their water resources.
